If you are already staying in Medan, getting to Bukit Lawang is relatively straightforward.

Expect approximately 3–5 hours, depending on traffic and your starting point.
Shared tourist transport
Some local travel operators offer shared vehicles between Medan and Bukit Lawang.
This can reduce the cost, although the journey may take longer because of passenger pickups and drop-offs.
Public bus
For the cheapest option, you can use local buses/minibuses.
A commonly used departure area is around Pinang Baris/Kampung Lalang, with onward local buses traveling toward Bukit Lawang.

How Long Does It Take to Get to Bukit Lawang?

Traffic, weather, road conditions, stops and waiting for public transportation can all affect the journey.
One mistake I see travelers make is planning their itinerary based only on the distance shown on a map.
Travel time in Sumatra is not determined by distance alone.
The roads become slower as you get closer to Bukit Lawang, and this is one reason I recommend giving yourself enough time rather than planning a very tight connection.
Bukit Lawang from Lake Toba
Many travelers visit both Lake Toba and Bukit Lawang during a Sumatra trip.
This is a great combination because the two destinations offer very different experiences.
Lake Toba is famous for its enormous volcanic lake and Batak culture, while Bukit Lawang is known as a gateway to the rainforest and Sumatran orangutan trekking.
If you are traveling from Lake Toba to Bukit Lawang, the journey is longer and requires more planning than traveling from Medan.
For this route, I recommend arranging your transportation in advance rather than trying to organize every connection after arriving in North Sumatra.

Bukit Lawang from Berastagi
Another popular route is:
Berastagi → Medan/Binjai → Bukit Lawang
Berastagi is located in the highlands of North Sumatra and is known for its cooler climate, agricultural areas and volcanic scenery.
If you are combining Berastagi, Bukit Lawang and Lake Toba in one trip, plan your transportation carefully.
North Sumatra is larger than it may appear on a map, and travel between destinations can take several hours.
