Where is Gunung Leuser National Park?

Gunung Leuser National Park is located on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia. Specifically in the northern part of Sumatra province with its capital Medan, about 3,5-4 hours from Kualanamu Airport.

How to Get There

From Kualanamo Airport you can book a taxi that goes directly to Bukit Lawang. Bukit Lawang is the closest village to Gunung Leuser National Park, this village is a tourist area that provides facilities for tourists before doing orangutan trekking activities in the National Park.

Or if you are a backpacker, you can use public transportation such as the Damri bus from the airport and stop at the Pinang Baris bus terminal in Medan city. From Pinang Baris Terminal you will continue by using PS (Pembangunan Semesta) which goes to Bukit Lawang.

The estimated cost of using a taxi or rental car is around Rp 600,000 to Rp 800,000 for a capacity of 4 or 5 people, or around Rp 100,000 per person when using public transportation. Using public buses takes longer and is sometimes crowded.

Orangutan Trekking Guide

Doing trekking in Gunung Leuser National Park requires fairly good physical condition, The trail is not plate and sometimes slippery.
