Where Is Bukit Lawang?

Located on the edge of Gunung Leuser National Park in North Sumatra, Bukit Lawang is a village known for its wild orangutan population. The distance is about 90 kilometers northwest of Medan. This tranquil place serves as a gateway to one of the most biologically diverse rainforests on the planet.

How to Get to Bukit Lawang

Going to Bukit Lawang is an adventure—a journey that winds through lush landscapes and offers a glimpse of rural Indonesian life. From Medan, you have several options:

Public Bus: Go to Pinang Baris Bus Terminal in Medan and take a bus to Bukit Lawang. The journey takes about 3-4 hours and is a dynamic way to experience the local culture.

Note: some people who claim to be brokers will increase the price from the general price set, usually the general price ranges from 25 thousand to 50 thousand rupiah

Car or Private Taxi: This is our recommendation. For a more comfortable trip, rent a car or private taxi. It is faster and offers the flexibility to stop and enjoy the stunning scenery along the way.

What Things to Do

Bukit Lawang is a paradise for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers. 

Jungle Trekking: Embark on a guided journey through the rainforest of Mount Leuser National Park. Spot wild orangutans swinging effortlessly among the trees—a rare and degrading sight. Trekking packages start from three hours, one day, or several days

Giant flowers: If they are in bloom we can see giant flowers such as rafflesia arnoldi or Amorphophallus titanum flowers in their native habitat

River Tube: Ride down the Bohorok River with an inner tube. The gentle current and surrounding greenery make for a blissful escape.

Wildlife journey: In addition to orangutans, the area is home to Thomas Leaf monkeys, macaques, hornbills, and a plethora of other wildlife.

Explore the Cave: Explore the Bat Cave for an underground adventure full of stalactites, stalagmites, and of course, bats.

Cultural Experience: Visit the local villages to experience traditional Indonesian life. Engage with the community, learn about their customs, and maybe pick up some Indonesian phrases.

Best Time to Visit

The climate in Bukit Lawang is tropical, so expect warmth and humidity all year round. However, timing your visit can improve your experience:

Dry season (June to September): Ideal for trekking and outdoor activities. Trails are more accessible, and the chances of rain disrupting your plans are smaller.

Rainy Season (October to May): Rainforests thrive, but trails can be slippery. However, it is more challenging and enjoys a quieter journey with fewer tourists
